The title "Management Consultant CMC" or "Management Consultant CMC / BDU" is only awarded to management consultants, related to management consulting, according to the rules of the ICMCI. The title "CMC / BDU management consultant" and entry in the professional register are only retained as long as the owner, managing director or permanent employee works for the BDU management consultancy, or as long as the management consultancy is a member of the BDU.
The title "Management Consultant CMC / BDU" cannot be acquired and managed by freelancers. Professional management consultants are commissioned by organizations / companies to provide consulting services in an objective and independent manner. The priority of the consultancy is to offer advice by looking at the company as a whole, concerning the present and future state of the company.
The professional management consultant will remain independent and neutral as he isn't an employee of the company or organization which requires his services.
This certification is awarded to the consultant as he is considered as an expert within his field, in terms theoretical knowledge and practical experience. He must demonstrate his professional experience, as well as project success and expertise. In order to obtain certification, the management consultant must reassure his customers as well as qualified colleagues that his skills and knowledge are adequate.
The Federal Association of German Management Consultants (Bundesverband Deutscher Unternehmensberater) BDU e.V. They had joined the International Council of Management Consulting Institutes (ICMCI) since 1995. Since 1995 they have been authorised to award the internationally recognized title, “Certified Management Consultant (CMC)” within Germany. The title "Certified Management Consultants" was in founded in the United States America. Most “CMCs” are now registered in Canada, USA 4,000 and Europe 3,000.

In 2009, the right to this title was given to "IdU Institute of Management Consultants" by BDU's . The institute has had its own legal form since 2013. The IdU Institute of Management Consultants awards the following titles:
- Management Consultants CMC
- Management ConsultantsCMC/BDU
- Restructuring Consultants CMC
- Restructuring ConsultantsCMC/BDU
In addition "/ BDU" signals that the management consultant is a permanent employee, managing director or owner of a management consultancy that, as a member of the BDU, places special demands on the quality of advice and professional principles.The CMC exam process takes place in a two-stage process.
